A Message from Dallas Habitat CEO about COVID-19

The COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic issues are rapidly sweeping across the country and changing how we work and live, at least for the foreseeable future.

Dallas Habitat is continuing to monitor the situation. Though more communications and action are required than “just monitoring” on our part, I wanted to provide an update and current thinking as we move forward.

To our Dallas Habitat family,

As our country pulls together and we continue to monitor the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, please know we are wishing you and your family the very best. We are making efforts to support the needs of our community, employees and Habitat families and I want to provide an update on those efforts and our current thinking as we move forward.

We are focusing our goals and priorities around safety, jobs and our mission. With these three objectives in mind, Habitat has modified many of our traditional business processes to try to collectively mitigate our organizational risks. We want to do everything we can to ensure this happens, honoring our commitment to families, safely and in accordance with CDC guidelines. This includes:

Volunteer Construction

Currently, we have paused building on our current houses for our families in order to keep our construction staff and CORE volunteers healthy and safe.

Wall Shop Activities:

At this time, we have canceled our scheduled Wall Shop Activities.

Habitat ReStores

Our ReStores are currently open M-F 9 AM – 6 PM and Sat-Sun 11 AM – 6 PM. We are taking extensive precautions and cleaning measures in order to keep our staff, volunteers, and shoppers safe.

Financial Education

We will continue to provide our financial education programs through Pocketwise Café – our digital financial education library rather than hosting in-person classes for families on their path to homeownership.

Dallas Headquarters

Our office is closed to the public. The majority of our office staff is working from home during this time.

Sponsors & Donors

In order to continue Habitat’s helping families achieve homeownership – we rely on the generosity of our family of sponsors and donors to accomplish this important work.

Many of you have asked how you can help – thank you. We need your support more than ever. You can help support our families by:

  • Advocating for our families. Call your representative and ask Congress to:
    • Mortgage payment forbearance
    • Issue a national moratorium on foreclosures and evictions
    • Extend short-term basic income supplements
    • Provide an immediate infusion of $60 billion in capital for nonprofits
    • Expand the universal charitable deduction
  • If you are able, please consider giving a monetary gift by visiting our website
  • Support us on social media by posting a photo of what home means to you with the #homesweethome and #dallashabitat. Visit us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter @dallashabitat and learn more

On a personal note, and beyond the safety of our donors, employees and families, the financial impact to Habitat and the nonprofit community, as well as for-profit industries, throughout the world could be significant. As many of you are contemplating your own decisions, we ask that you consider making a donation that we can put to use in serving families, honoring our commitments to them and keeping our organization operational.

I want to thank all of you for your patience and support of our mission through these unique and challenging times we’re all facing together. In closing, I share with you this prayer from Jonathan Reckford, HFHI CEO –

“May those of us who are merely inconvenienced remember those whose lives are at stake. May we who have no risk factors remember the most vulnerable. May we who settle in for quarantine at home remember those who have no home. As fear grips our country, let us choose love.”
