Meet the Padilla-Hernadez Family

Read a recap of our 2019 efforts, our new Power of Pennies program and learn about a family who didn’t let fear stop them from homeownership.

We Never Thought We’d Be Able To Qualify For A Home

Mr. Hernadez said, as he explained his initial hesitations when thinking of the home buying process. As a humble carpenter who immigrated to America for a better life, he prides himself on taking the initiative to learn a new skill each day – but when it comes to home owning, it’s not as straightforward.

“People would say all of these scary stories, like you need $10,000 for a down payment on a house”, Mrs. Hernadez chimed in. Emphasizing that a home for their young family was out of reach.

Thanks to all of the support from ReStore sales, Habitat for Humanity was able to orchestrate the ‘Blitz Build’ in Joppa Texas for families like the Hernadez family. The build did not only produce 13 homes in five days, but created a community that was safe and warm, in an area that was previously tired and empty. Mrs. Hernadez smiles when describing what living in a home means to her saying, “life will only get better for us”.

Keep The Change

Is what most people say after purchasing their morning coffee. What if those extra coins flying around in your car, pocket or purse could help build a house for a family in need? Well, it can. At Humanity ReStores, we’re looking at loose coins a lot differently. Introducing our Power of Pennies program. When shopping at a Humanity ReStore, your cashier will ask you if you’d like to round your purchase up to the nearest dollar. For us, all of those “keep the change” moments add up. We’ve set out to raise $100,000 through our Power of Pennies program, with the goal of purchasing lots to build more affordable housing in the coming years. We’ll use your change to create change.
