A World Where Everyone Has A Decent Place To Live
At Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity, we see a Dallas where every neighborhood is proud and we are proud of every neighborhood. To move us closer to this vision, we need to understand how homeownership fits into the picture of the Dallas we want to build.
With a missing middle class and declining rates of homeownership, revitalizing our neighborhoods and increasing access to homeownership is more important than ever in bringing back lost purchasing power, tax base, and associated neighborhood stability.
More than a roof, homeownership is a catalyst for transforming our communities, building financial stability for generations, and priming the neighborhood for economic development. As part of our expanded mission of serving the many— building homeowner equity and asset wealth, addressing the affordable housing gap, strengthening neighborhoods and improving health and education for children and families—Dallas Habitat is working collaboratively on a vision for new policies and products that will create a better value proposition for builders and potential buyers.
What We Do
Through affordable homeownership opportunities, financial education, advocacy efforts, and neighborhood empowerment programs, Dallas Habitat transforms families, revitalizes neighborhoods, and is working together to build a better Dallas. Strategically bringing together public and private funding, community leadership and vision, and thousands of volunteers—we will break the cycle of poverty and transform our communities.
Who We Serve
Committed to building a better Dallas through the transformative power of affordable homeownership, our tools provide sustainable solutions to meet the needs of our city and serve hardworking families with pathways to ownership.
Dallas Habitat serves families between 25% and 60% of the area median income, with innovative products that allow us to reach a diverse clientele. All of our hardworking families demonstrate a need, an ability to pay, and a willingness to partner—to work with the support and educational services of Dallas Habitat to build a stronger future where home is just the beginning.
How It Works
A hand up, not a handout—Dallas Habitat empowers families with pathways out of low-asset poverty. Housing is often the greatest expense for families. Our model ensures that expense is affordable—guaranteeing mortgage payments will be no more than 30% of a family’s monthly income at the time of closing. Families also contribute “sweat equity” by building on their home and the homes of their neighbors, playing a critical part in the transformation of the community.
Our successful plan is largely credited to our supportive services focused on helping families prepare for ownership and navigating them through what is otherwise a complicated process. Dallas Habitat’s Homebuyer Education classes equip families with a stronger understanding of budgeting, home maintenance, and the various skills needed to empower them with stability and success.
