Why Women Build Matters
For far too many North Texas families, rising costs, limited availability, and systemic barriers put safe, affordable homeownership out of reach. These challenges disproportionately affect women, especially single mothers, who often face higher childcare costs, lower wages, and limited access to financial resources.
Yet, when women achieve homeownership, the impact is transformational. Women’s homeownership creates lasting stability for families and strengthens entire communities. By building equity, women gain financial independence, create generational wealth, and provide more secure futures for their children. Research shows that children of women homeowners experience better health, higher academic achievement, and greater long-term opportunity. Women homeowners also contribute to stronger, more engaged, and more resilient neighborhoods.

The Challenge
Across the country, economic and systemic challenges continue to put homeownership out of reach for many women, and North Texas is no exception for those seeking a pathway to financial independence.
Single Latina and Black women have the lowest homeownership rates of any group in the U.S.
In 49 states, women pay higher mortgage costs than men, including up to $7,000 more in interest over the full loan term.
23% of single women homebuyers make less than $50K compared to 11% single men.
Dallas Habitat FY25 Impact
Dallas Habitat’s Women Build initiative helps close that gap by providing the tools, education, and support women need to succeed. The result is stronger families, thriving communities, and lasting opportunity.

2026 Women Build Family
Maria Aguayo
Maria Aguayo and her daughter, Catherine Clark, are a close-knit family built on resilience, hard work, and a strong commitment to one another. Originally from Mexico, Maria came to the United States at 18 years old and has worked hard to create a stable foundation for her family as a single mother of four children. Today, she works as a custodian at a Dallas police station, while Catherine works for the City of Dallas and is continuing her education to become a radiologic technician.
The family currently lives in Pleasant Grove, where they have built a life together over the past eight years. As their family has grown, they have looked forward to having more space and comfort in a home of their own. Yamilet is especially excited about having her own bedroom, while Alex looks forward to enjoying a spacious backyard.
Maria and Catherine first learned about Dallas Habitat through a coworker and entered the program hoping to achieve the dream of homeownership. Although they expected the process to be difficult, they quickly found encouragement and support from the Dallas Habitat team. “Thanks to Jaenett, we now feel like becoming homeowners is truly possible for our family.”
Today, the family is excited about creating long-term stability and putting down roots in a safe and supportive neighborhood. Maria and Catherine are honored to be part of the Dallas Habitat family and grateful for the opportunity to build a brighter future through homeownership.
