Volunteering on a Habitat Construction Site? Check Out These FAQs to Get Ready

Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity on one of our construction sites is an easy process! But it is still a construction site, so there are some safety protocols and best practices that you should follow to ensure that you and everyone else has a great (and safe!) time. Check out our most frequently asked questions from volunteers below!

When can I volunteer with Habitat?

Our builds usually take place between Wednesday and Saturday. You can sign up for a full day build with a group, or–if you’re a core volunteer–you can sign up for multiple builds as an individual.

Our build sites are in high demand, so it’s easier to get a spot for your group if you schedule far in advance or if you’re flexible about dates.

When should I arrive/leave the site?

We will provide you with arrival and estimated departure times. Please arrive on time or a few minutes early to sign in. Try not to arrive late, because we do hold an orientation that includes task assignment and our safety speech.

You may leave early if necessary, but please check in with the Site Supervisor or Construction Manager so they can get you signed out.

What should I wear to a build site?

The most important thing is that you are safe and comfortable. Remember that this is a construction site and you may be painting, demolishing, or building. Do not wear clothes that cannot be ripped or stained.

You must wear close-toed shoes when on the build site. Please try to check the weather before hand and dress accordingly–we do not provide gloves, hats, or sweatshirts as a practice.

Are there bathrooms?

There will be a porta-potty on site as well as a hand washing station.

Do I need to know how to use power tools?

There is no previous experience required when you work with Habitat! If you do know how to use tools, that’s excellent! Be sure to tell your Site Supervisor or Construction Manager so they can assign you accordingly.

But there are plenty of tasks to be done that require absolutely no prior experience. Sanding, painting, yardwork…just to name a few!

If you are struggling or uncomfortable with a certain task, don’t be afraid to speak up! We always have something else you can help with.

Can I bring my kids with me?

We do not allow children under the age of 16 on the build sites for safety and compliance reasons. Any volunteers aged 16 or 17 MUST be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.

If you bring a minor to volunteer, you will need to sign a Volunteer Release, Waiver of Liability and Indemnity Agreement.

Can I bring my partner or my friend?

Absolutely! But they MUST create an account in the Volunteer portal and sign up for the build. We cannot accept unregistered volunteers on site for safety and liability reasons.

Will there be food?

Because providing food makes the build more expensive, we do not provide food or snacks for volunteers unless it’s a special event. Generally, we ask that volunteers bring their own lunch. We recommend brown bag lunches. There will not be microwaves or fridges available on most build sites.

However, we do provide water for all of our volunteers. Please bring a refillable water bottle if posible.
