Habitat for Humanity Volunteer Opportunities

If you’re looking for ways to volunteer and give back in the Dallas area, consider Habitat for Humanity. Our mission is to improve and strengthen our communities by providing safe, affordable housing to deserving families in need.

Habitat is a nationally and globally recognized non-profit and many people have at least heard of us. In fact, you may picture volunteers holding hammers and wearing hard hats when you hear our name! And we certainly do offer construction site volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups alike. But there are also dozens of other volunteer opportunities at Habitat.

No matter where your talents lie, we can help you make a difference for your community and in the lives of others.

Construction

This is the most well-known type of Habitat volunteering! Habitat for Humanity provides families and volunteers with the opportunity to come together and build homes.

A family partners with Habitat, contributing their “sweat equity,” or their own labor. Volunteers offer them support and “muscle”, allowing the houses to be built for substantially lower costs than regular construction companies.

Team building and new friendships are pretty much guaranteed as you work with your fellow volunteers to raise the walls on a brand new home. No construction experience required! We have supervisors on site to ensure your safety and that the build is up to code.

You can volunteer on a regular basis or when your schedule permits. Just note that construction sites have limited availability, so they are usually reserved for sponsor volunteer groups and Core Volunteers.

To become a Core Vounteer, you just have to commit to volunteering once a month and completing Habitat University–a construction training program.

Habitat University Requirements:

  • Mandatory Orientation
  • Attend a Home Dedication
40 Hours of hands-on build site training
  • Learn valuable skills in home construction with Dallas Habitat while improving communities and making a difference in the lives of others.

ReStore

You can also volunteer with the Habitat ReStore. The ReStore is a place where you can come to buy new and gently used home decorating items that have been donated by other members of our community.

Volunteers work alongside staff to create an enjoyable shopping experience for customers and keep everything running smoothly. There are four ReStores open 7 days a week, so it’s easy to find times to volunteer.

We can use all sort of skill sets at the ReStore–from welcoming customers to running the cash register, to restocking the sales floor, there’s always something to do. Become one of our “Blue Hat Volunteers” by volunteering weekly and passing our ReStore training!

Duties may include:

  • Acting as a shift leader for volunteers at the ReStores
  • Greet the daily volunteers and help them sign in
  • Guide volunteers in a safe and engaging way
  • Work with managers and staff to appropriately place daily volunteers
  • Complete daily tasks and special projects as well as supply management
  • Help keep the storefront clutter-free and attractive to customers
  • Greet customers and offer assistance

Neighborhood Clean Up

In addition to building homes and providing repairs, the Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity also organizes neighborhood clean ups. These clean ups are deigned to help beautify our communities by removing trash and debris.

This improves neighborhood morale and increases property values, making it more likely for home to be bought and sold in the area. We schedule these events throughout the year as need and opportunity arise.

If you’d like to be involved in our next Habitat Clean Up, check out our Volunteer Portal for posts. For group volunteering opportunities, email volunteer@dallas-habitat.org.

Office Volunteers

If you’re not able to stand for long periods of time or you’re particularly gifted in admin, there are still plenty of volunteer opportunities with Habitat! We can always use help in the offices with filing, sorting, organizing, putting together welcome home baskets for homeowners, etc.

We post these opportunities as needed in the Volunteer Portal, so check in regularly!
