Where do my donations go?
Your donation can go a lot of places. From financial education programs, advocacy work, construction or our ReStore locations, we have a multi-layered approach to how we help families across Dallas.
Financial Education
Taking homeownership education courses is a requirement of all Habitat homeowners. These courses allow the future homeowners to be empowered and prepared for the responsibility of homeownership.
What do homeownership education courses cover?
- Retirement planning and prep
- Home buying process
- Credit scores and debt
- Repayments and loans
- Budgeting and money management
- Saving for college
These courses can be taken in person, or online and are not one-size-fits-all. Each future homebuyer has the ability to pick and choose courses that are relevant to them and their needs.
Advocacy
The need for affordable housing is a problem beyond Dallas. Across the country millions of families are faced with difficult decisions each day such as paying for housing or providing food for their family.
Dallas Area Habitat stands on a united front with our national partners, and advocates for affordable housing annually across the nation during pivotal events such as Advocacy Day, Cost of Home and the Affordable Housing Summit.
These initiatives include:
- championing racial justice and equality
- local and national policies around affordable housing
- and uniting with politicians and finance experts on affordable housing
Construction
Volunteers, building supplies and team leaders are all fundamental pieces to making a Habitat homeowners dream come true. Construction (or ‘build’) donations are used to fuel an incredible team to ensure our construction sites are safe and secure for our volunteers and building materials.
Donors can contribute a value to match a specific building material:
- Door Knob: $25.00
- Box of Nails: $50.00
- Kitchen Fixtures: $100.00
- Windows: $500.00
Habitat Core Builders are always at work. We also host special events over the course of the year such as Women Build.
ReStores
You may have run into a Habitat ReStore before and not realized that there’s a bigger story behind it. Habitat ReStores are located across the country and sell donated or recycled home goods and hardware supplies and all proceeds are donated to Habitat for Humanity to help build homes for local communities.
Recycling, and donating building supplies helps the environment by reducing waste. You can often find new or gently used:
- Cabinets
- Decor
- Rugs
- Windows
- Furniture
And more.
